On January 22, bass innovator Eberhard Weber celebrates his 80th birthday.
Weber first appeared on ECM 50 years ago, playing on Wolfgang Dauner’s Output in 1970. His leader debut The Colours of Chloë won the highest German record award in 1975. (Großer Deutscher Schallplattenpreis) In his first decade with ECM, Weber played with Gary Burton’s band with guitarists Pat Metheny and Mick Goodrick, and he was also a member of Ralph Towner’s Solstice quartet, with Jan Garbarek and Jon Christensen.
Eberhard Weber’s popular band, Colours, featured saxophonist Charlie Mariano (as on the albums Yellow Fields, Silent Feet, and Little Movements). From 1978, Weber made his work with Jan Garbarek a priority. He toured the globe with the Jan Garbarek Group and appeared on a dozen albums with the Norwegian saxophonist.
The albums Résumé and Encore incorporate recorded solos from his performances with the Garbarek Group, while Hommage à Eberhard Weber brought together an all-star line-up of friends and collaborators in a unique programme of Weber compositions, incorporating taped material and an extended homage by Pat Metheny. In 2015 he published the memoir Résumé: eine deutsche Jazz-Geschichte.
