Days from Peter Sparling
A series. Sequential art-making. A set. I seem to be drawn lately to capturing "still frames" of my dancing and laying them down in sequence on video.
When does painting enter a time zone, calculated by its maker to evoke a duration, transformation, or even a narrative?
I use video to "animate" this series of 46 paintings (acrylic on black paper, each 20" x 26") created by following a movement phrase I improvised to Bach. I finally broke from the obligation of honoring J.S. and freed myself to order and time the images without music. But alas, I yearned for a thread of sound as a map of rhythms to guide me. I recently discovered Leslie Bassett's piano music, and the piece I chose offered me a treble (right hand?) voice to follow, a note at a time.
