ECM News: Keith Jarretts Bordeaux Concert und Ukraine-Künstler Valentin Silvestrov

 

Bordeaux Concert is a special document from Keith Jarrett’s last European tour. Each of Jarrett’s 2016 solo piano concerts had its own strikingly distinct character, and in Bordeaux the lyrical impulse is to the fore. In the course of this improvised suite, many quiet discoveries are made, and there is a touching freshness to the music as a whole, a feeling of intimate communication. Reviewing the July 2016 performance, the French press spoke of hints of the Köln Concert and Bremen-Lausanne in the flow of things, and extended sections of Bordeaux are beguilingly beautiful.

Tender songs are pulled from the air, “rousing a community of listening at the edge of silence”, as Le Monde put it, “an awareness of time out from the noise and weariness of the world.”
 

With Maidan, Valentin Silvestrov continues his longstanding association with ECM and this time presents a programme of choir music that is as timely as it is dear to the Ukrainian composer’s heart. Like the albums Sacred Songs and Sacred Works, Maidan embraces Silvestrov’s composing for vocal ensemble and captures the Kyiv Chamber Choir under Mykola Hobdych in an impassioned performance at the St. Michael’s Cathedral in Kyiv from 2016. Silvestrov, who in spring 2022 had to leave his Kyiv home of over half a century, composed “Maidan 2014”,

a ‘cycle of cycles’, in the wake of the ‘Euromaidan’ – the wave of demonstrations that hit Ukraine in 2014. Replete with liturgical passages and verses by Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchencko, Maidan offers a wealth of melodies with both hymnal and chant-like structures. In the CD’s liner text, Silvestrov points out how “it’s no accident that the symbolic crown and ending of the “Maidan 2014” cycle is a quiet lullaby. For I’m neither able nor willing to duplicate the noise of this terrible war. Instead, I want to show how fragile our civilisation is. I try, with my music, to safeguard and preserve a day of peace.” The album is released as Silvestrov turns 85.October 7 Valentin Silvestrov will be honoured with the special prize for his life time achievement from Germany’s Opus Classic Awards.

ECM News: J.S. Bach und Jazz des Monats

 

On Fred Thomas's album Three Or One, Bach’s idiom is respectfully explored by Kazakh violinist Aisha Orazbayeva and British cellist Lucy Railton. It was hailed by German daily newspaper Frank- furter Allgemeine as "moments of musical bliss. If we want to carry something positive from the past year into the new one, these contemplative readings of 24 chorales are just the thing. The shortest lasts less than a minute, the longest not even five minutes. Yet there is something purifying about their unassuming beauty."

 

In its newest issue, BBC Music Magazine gave Ayumi Tanaka and her trio album Subaqueous Silence the coveted five star rating and made it Jazz choice this month. "If there's some kind of fantastical Venn diagram involving Monk, the Wandelweiser Group and Morton Feldman, then her first album as a leader for ECM demonstrates that pianist Ayumi Tanaka, whose rarefied approach to the instrument is a perfect fit for label founder Manfred Eicher's production style, surely belongs in the overlap."

ECM News: Louis Sclavis, Ethan Iverson Quartet, Jan Garbarek

Am 20. September erschienen nun die beiden bereits in meinem letzten Newsletter avisierten Alben von Louis Sclavis und des Ethan Iverson Quartet.

Auf Louis Sclavis' 13. ECM-Aufnahme Characters On A Wall findet der französische Klarinettist Inspiration aus zwei Quellen - der Straßenkunst von Ernest Pignon-Ernest und der  Originalität eines neuen Quartetts. Pignon-Ernests Arbeiten waren zuvor Gegenstand von Sclavis' hochgelobter 2002er Aufnahme Napoli's Walls. Diesmal betrachtet Sclavis ein breiteres Spektrum der in situ Collagen des Künstlers, auf der Suche nach "einer Dynamik, einer Bewegung, die einen Rhythmus, eine Emotion, ein Lied hervorbringt". Mit ihm auf der Suche sind die Bassistin Sarah Murcia, der Schlagzeuger Christophe Lavergne und der Pianist Benjamjn Moussay. Characters on A Wall erscheint auf Vinyl und CD.

Das neueste ECM-Album mit Ethan Iverson trägt den Titel Common Practice und präsentiert den in Brooklyn lebenden Pianisten an der Spitze seines Quartetts live im Manhattaner Village Vanguard. Iverson's Band für Common Practice beinhaltet als wichtigste melodische Stimme den Veteranen Tom Harrell. Iverson preist die poetische "Verletzlichkeit" in Harrells Spiel, insbesondere in Balladen wie "The Man I Love" und "Polka Dots and Moonbeams", zwei der Highlights des Albums. Dank des Rhythmusteams aus Bassist Ben Street und Schlagzeuger Eric McPherson, dessen Einfallsreichtum dazu beiträgt, Denzil Best's Bebop-Groover "Wee" und zwei bluesige Iverson-Originale voranzutreiben, vibriert Common Practice vor Swing.

Am 06. Oktober gibt es eine besondere Veröffentlichung auf ECM New Series: 

25 Jahre nach der Veröffentlichung von Officium, der bahnbrechenden ersten Zusammenarbeit von Jan Garbarek und dem Hilliard Ensemble, erscheint nun das Livealbum Remember me, my dear, aufgenommen während der letzten Tournee der Gruppe im Oktober 2014. Das Programm macht die Bandbreite des Repertoires, das der Saxophonist und das Vokalquartett gemeinsam ausgelotet haben, deutlich  - von Pérotin, Hildegard von Bingen, Guillaume le Rouge, Antoine Brumel bis zu Komitas, Arvo Pärt und anderen. Man könnte sagen, dass die Kombination aus Garbarek und den Hilliards im Konzert ihre Ausgangsmaterialien transzendiert hat, mit Alter Musik, zeitgenössischer Komposition und Improvisation, die sich in die reaktionsfähige Akustik sakraler Räume mischten.
