ECM im April: Silent, Listening von Fred Hersch

Als einzige Neuheit  in diesem Monat ein Soloalbum von Fred Hersch, das erste Album des Amerikaners bei ECM als Leader:

 

Silent, Listening ist eine essentielle Ergänzung der Solo-Klavieraufnahmen bei ECM mit einem der herausragenden improvisierenden Pianisten unserer Zeit: Fred Hersch. Das Album umfasst sieben Eigenkompositionen sowie eine Handvoll Standards, darunter Billy Strayhorns "Star-Crossed Lovers", Sigmund Rombergs "Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise", Alec Wilders "Winter Of My Discontent" und Russ Freemans "The Wind". Hersch geht die Musik durchweg mit jener seltenen Konzentration, Sensibilität und Eleganz an, für die der Jazz-Doyen bekannt ist. Das Album wurde mit dem Produzenten Manfred Eicher in der besonderen Akustik des Studios in Lugano entwickelt und im Mai 2023 aufgenommen.

 

Ende Mai kommen außerdem Vinyl-Re-Issues von Kenny Wheelers Album Angel Song und von Gateway in der ‚Luminessence‘-Reihe, und Anfang Juni ein neues  Album von Oded Tzur. 

ECM: März 2024

Der Frühlingskalender ist vollgepackt mit vielen Konzerten von ECM-Künstlern, darunter Dominic Miller, John Scofield, Mark Turner, Nik Bärtsch, András Schiff, Elina Duni und anderen.

Das Dänische Streichquartett wird in den kommenden Monaten nicht nur über 20 Konzerte geben, sondern übernimmt auch die künstlerische Leitung des 12. jährlichen Frühlingsfestivals auf der Insel Rügen vom 8. bis 17. März.

Ihr hochgelobtes Prism-Projekt wurde 2023 abgeschlossen und ist auf fünf CDs erhältlich, die eine bestimmte Bach-Fuge mit einem späten Beethoven-Quartett verbinden, das wiederum mit einem Quartett eines späteren Meisters verbunden ist.

Ein weiteres Highlight wird vom 8. bis 11. Mai das ECM Festival Freiburg im Südwesten Deutschlands sein. Die viertägige Veranstaltung präsentiert Auftritte von Nitai Hershkovits, dem Dominic Miller Quartet, dem Maciej Obara Quartet und Zsófia Boros.

Freitagabend ist eine Hommage an Anja Lechner mit Auftritten von François Couturier, Pablo Márquez und Mona Matbou Riahi. Tickets gibt es hier: LINK

Neue Alben:

Hervorragende Reaktionen auf die letzten angekündigten neuen Alben von Vijay Iyer und John Surman: 

“The pianist’s group improvises with entrancing dynamism. This second offering from Mr Iyer’s trio invests yet further in the qualities that make the ensemble singular, not least a shared fascination with nuances of rhythmic expression on a communal sense of flow. It revels in dynamics that are calibrated with great care and […] achieve startling force”, schrieb Larry Blumenfeld im WALLL STREET JOURNAL über Iyers Compassion. “Die drei Musiker spielen zusammen, als hielten sie telepathisch Kontakt zueinander. Als könnte das freie Gespräch die Probleme der Welt in Schönheit auflösen”, befand Tobias Rapp im SPIEGEL. Und der britische GUARDIAN kürte Compassion zu seinem ’Jazz album of the month’.

Über John Surmans Words Unspoken wiederum urteilte Jack Kenny im britischen Portal JAZZVIEWS: “The writing on the album is the kind that dissolves imperceptibly into improvisation. The subtlety and the artistry are adventurous. The album is a deeply satisfying, significant experience from one of Europe’s leading voices.”

Der März steht für uns in diesem Jahr ganz im Zeichen des Vinyls:

ECMs audiophile Vinyl-Reissue-Serie Luminessence wird in diesem Monat März 2024 mit drei Veröffentlichungen fortgesetzt. Gerade erschienen die titelgebende Jan Garbarek-Aufnahme von Keith Jarrett-Kompositionen für Streichorchester und Saxophon – Luminessence – aus demJahr 1975, sowie Garbareks erstes Album für das Label, Afric Pepperbird, aufgenommen im Jahr 1970.

Am 29.03. folgt das Debütalbum von Azimuth, das ursprünglich 1977 veröffentlicht wurde und die besondere Synergie von Norma Winstone, John Taylor und Kenny Wheeler dokumentiert. Die Serie ist konzipiert als ein Kaleidoskop, das die Juwelen des umfangreichen Label-Katalogs in eleganten, hochwertigen Editionen beleuchtet.

Im April kommt ein neues Solo-Album von Fred Hersch. Mehr Einzelheiten dazu in Kürze.

Rückblick bei ECM

Mit Strands von Palle Mikkelborg, Jakob Bro und Marilyn Mazur und der neuen Aufnahme von Levon Eskenian und dem Gurdjieff Ensemble sind erst letzte Woche die letzten beiden neuen Alben auf ECM im Jahr 2023 erschienen.

Da sich das Jahr langsam dem Ende zuneigt, sollten wir noch einmal auf die vielen faszinierenden Alben zurückblicken, die 2023 auf ECM und ECM New Series erschienen sind.

Auf dem ECM-Imprint gab es neue Quartett-Alben von Elina Duni, Dominic Miller, Anders Jormin, Maciej Obara und Ralph Alessi.

Bobo Stenson, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Jacob Young, John Scofield, Joe Lovano und Mette Henriette veröffentlichten neue Aufnahmen in wechselnden Trio-Konstellationen.

Die Duos Sebastian Rochford und Kit Downes, Gianluigi Trovesi und Stefano Montanari sowie Nils Økland und Sigbjørn Apeland präsentierten einzigartige Duo-Auftritte, während Stephan Micus sein 25. Album in seinen 45 Jahren bei ECM veröffentlichte, Ralph Towner sein Soloalbum At Frist Light veröffentlichte und Nitai Hershkovits ein Steller-Album zu ECMs reichhaltigem Katalog von Solo-Klavieraufnahmen.

Im Jahr 2023 gab es für die New Series von ECM eine Reihe von Veröffentlichungen, die in Zukunft als Klassiker angesehen werden könnten.

In der ersten Jahreshälfte erschienen András Schiffs J.S.Bach-Interpretationen auf Clavichord, einem Konzertmitschnitt von Thomas Zehetmair und Ruth Killius mit der Royal Northern Sinfonia, dem fünften und letzten Teil der PRISM-Reihe des Danish String Quartet, einer Soloeinspielung der Gitarristin Zsofia Boros sowie Vox Clamantis' Interpretation von Werken des norwegischen Komponisten Henrik Ødegaard.

Das John Holloway Ensemble, Heinz Holliger, Thomas Larcher und der Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir und das Tallinn Chamber Orchestra unter der Leitung von Tõnu Kaljuste sahen ihre Aufnahmen neben Keith Jarretts Interpretation von Carl Philip Emanuel Bachs Württemberg-Sonaten und dem neuen Arvo Pärt-Album Tractus.

Außer den Neuerscheinungen hat ECM die LUMINESSENCE-Serie audiophiler Vinyl-Neuauflagen auf den Markt gebracht. Nach der Veröffentlichung von fünf Meilensteinen aus dem Katalog der letzten Monate stehen die nächsten Titel bereits für eine Veröffentlichung im März 2024 in den Startlöchern. 

Aber es gibt noch mehr zu entdecken aus den vergangenen Jahren. Wir haben fast 100 Alben ausgewählt, von denen die meisten in den letzten fünf Jahren veröffentlicht wurden, um in das Sonderangebot dieser Woche aufgenommen zu werden.

ECM-Records

ECM im September

Frozen Silence – womöglich Maciej Obaras bisher stärkstes musikalisches Statement – ist die dritte ECM-Veröffentlichung des polnisch-norwegischen Quartetts um den Altsaxophonisten und setzt die Geschichte von Unloved und Three Crowns fort. Eindringliches Zusammenspiel ist das Markenzeichen der Gruppe und prägt hier ein Programm neuer Obara-Kompositionen, die von den dramatischen Landschaften des „Riesengebirges“ im Südwesten Polens inspiriert sind. In den Stücken kommt Maciejs intuitive musikalische Beziehung zum Pianisten Dominik Wania zur Geltung, während Bassist Ole Morten Vågan und Schlagzeuger Gard Nilssen immer wieder über die Rolle der Rhythmusgruppe hinauswachsen und ihre kraftvollen Ideen einbringen. Das Album wurde im Juni 2022 in Oslo aufgenommen und von Manfred Eicher produziert.

Es ist die zeitlose Kraft der Volksmusik, die die Lebenskraft der Kompositionen von Veljo Tormis (1930-2017) antreibt. Wie der estnische Komponist bekanntlich sagte: "Nicht ich bediene mich des Volkslieds. Das Volkslied bedient sich meiner". Dieses Gefühl wird in den einzigartigen Aufführungen des Estnischen Philharmonischen Chors und des Tallinner Kammerorchesters unter der Leitung von Tõnu Kaljuste, dem jahrzehntelangen engsten musikalischen Gefährten von Tormis, auf dem neuen Album Reminiscentiae wiedergegeben. Es wurde im Oktober und November 2020 in der Methodistenkirche in Tallinn aufgenommen.

Mitte des Monats folgt eine neue Aufnahme mit Sinikka Langeland:

"Wenn man sich mit Sinikka Langeland in einem Raum befindet, ist es, als würde man in einen nördlichen Wald unter einem Nachthimmel verzaubert werden", schrieb Fiona Talkington im britischen Magazin Songlines. "Ihre Präsenz und ihre Stimme sind magisch, aber wenn sie ihre Kantele spielt, kann man fast spüren, wie die Natur selbst vor Freude bebt."

Langelands neue Gruppe mit Mathias Eick, Tryve Seim, Mats Eilertsen und Thomas Strønen ist eine optimale Zusammenstellung von norwegischen Musikern, von denen jeder für sich ein ECM-Bandleader ist, und die alle ihre Ideen in die musikalischen Dialoge einbringen – und, wie Sinikka meint, "die Musik in ihren fulminanten improvisierten Soli nochmals weiterentwickeln." Für ihre Songtexte wendet sich Sinikka diesmal den Schriften des Dichters und Romanciers Jon Fosse zu, einem der wichtigsten zeitgenössischen Autoren Norwegens. Wind and Sun, Sinikka Langelands achtes ECM-Album, wurde im September 2022 im Rainbow Studio in Oslo aufgenommen und im März 2023 im Bavaria Tonstudio in München gemischt.

Eine Woche darauf, am 22.September, gibt es auch bei New Series zwei weitere Neuheiten:

Nach einem Programm mit Werken, die sich thematisch um die Lachrimae Pavans (ECM
2189) des Renaissance-Komponisten John Dowland drehten, widmen sich der Geiger John Holloway und sein Ensemble nun in einer neuen Einspielung den Fantazias des Barockkomponisten Henry Purcell. In seinem ausführlichen Begleittext zu den Fantasien bemerkt Holloway, dass man „rückblickend versucht ist, dieses brillante Kondensat des Allerbesten von Byrd, Lawes, Jenkins und Locke als persönlichen Abschied von einer Musikform zu sehen, die auch in seiner eigenen Kammermusik bald von Sonaten abgelöst werden sollte." Purcells Fantasien gelten als einige der feinsten und anspruchsvollsten Werke der Gattung, die mit profundem Kontrapunkt und großer Beherrschung aller polyphonen Techniken der damaligen Zeit auftrumpfen.

In seinem Éventail de musique française durchstreift der Schweizer Oboist und Komponist Heinz Holliger eine breite Auswahl französischer Werke für Oboe und Klavier in einem weit gefächerten Programm der Musik des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. "Die Nähe der Oboe zur menschlichen Stimme brachte mich auf die Idee,“, so Holliger im CD-Begleittext, „anhand der noch viel zu wenig bekannten Sammlung von Vocalises-Etudes, den farbenreichen Fächer der französischen Musik ein Stück weit zu öffnen.“ In diesem umfangreichen Rezital sind Kompositionen von Ravel, Debussy, Milhaud, Saint-Saëns, Casadesus sowie Koechlin, Jolivet und Messiaen enthalten – zu mehreren der Komponisten pflegte Holliger auch persönliche Beziehungen. Am Klavier ist Anton Kernjak zu hören, der 2014 auf Holligers Aufnahme Aschenmusik vertreten war, während die französische Harfenistin Alice Belugou auf André Jovilets ‚Controversia pour hautbois et harpe‘ ihren Beitrag leistet. Éventail folgt auf die Veröffentlichung von Heinz Holligers mehrfach preisgekrönter Oper Lunea aus dem Jahr 2022.

Den Monat beschließt dann ein besonderes Jazz-Highlight:

Wolfgang Muthspiel und sein Trio mit Scott Colley am Bass und Brian Blade am Schlagzeug erreichen auf Dance of the Elders einen neuen kreativen Höhepunkt. Das besondere Jazzidiom des Gitarristen ist sowohl vom Folk als auch von der klassischen Musik geprägt – beide Aspekte werden auf dem Album deutlich herausgestellt. Brians schwebend-perkussive Einwürfe und Scotts wendiger Kontrapunkt am Bass ergänzen Wolfgangs akustisches und elektrisches Spiel in fließendem Interplay über vertrackte Polyrhythmen und abenteuerliche harmonische Landschaften.

 

ECM News: Keith Jarretts Bordeaux Concert und Ukraine-Künstler Valentin Silvestrov

 

Bordeaux Concert is a special document from Keith Jarrett’s last European tour. Each of Jarrett’s 2016 solo piano concerts had its own strikingly distinct character, and in Bordeaux the lyrical impulse is to the fore. In the course of this improvised suite, many quiet discoveries are made, and there is a touching freshness to the music as a whole, a feeling of intimate communication. Reviewing the July 2016 performance, the French press spoke of hints of the Köln Concert and Bremen-Lausanne in the flow of things, and extended sections of Bordeaux are beguilingly beautiful.

Tender songs are pulled from the air, “rousing a community of listening at the edge of silence”, as Le Monde put it, “an awareness of time out from the noise and weariness of the world.”
 

With Maidan, Valentin Silvestrov continues his longstanding association with ECM and this time presents a programme of choir music that is as timely as it is dear to the Ukrainian composer’s heart. Like the albums Sacred Songs and Sacred Works, Maidan embraces Silvestrov’s composing for vocal ensemble and captures the Kyiv Chamber Choir under Mykola Hobdych in an impassioned performance at the St. Michael’s Cathedral in Kyiv from 2016. Silvestrov, who in spring 2022 had to leave his Kyiv home of over half a century, composed “Maidan 2014”,

a ‘cycle of cycles’, in the wake of the ‘Euromaidan’ – the wave of demonstrations that hit Ukraine in 2014. Replete with liturgical passages and verses by Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchencko, Maidan offers a wealth of melodies with both hymnal and chant-like structures. In the CD’s liner text, Silvestrov points out how “it’s no accident that the symbolic crown and ending of the “Maidan 2014” cycle is a quiet lullaby. For I’m neither able nor willing to duplicate the noise of this terrible war. Instead, I want to show how fragile our civilisation is. I try, with my music, to safeguard and preserve a day of peace.” The album is released as Silvestrov turns 85.October 7 Valentin Silvestrov will be honoured with the special prize for his life time achievement from Germany’s Opus Classic Awards.

ECM: The Next Door von Julia Hülsmann Quartet

 

On The Next Door Julia Hülsmann returns with the quartet from 2019’s Not Far From Here, and presents her unique pianistic voice in a varied programme of almost exclusively original music, composed by herself and her colleagues – tenor saxophonist Uli Kempendorff, Marc Muellbauer on double bass and drummer Heinrich Köbberling. A deep respect for the jazz tradition, as cultivated in the post-bop and modal jazz of the 60s, permeates this session and, with the quartet’s modern twist, sets the stage for highly expressive soloing and profound interplay.

Neues bei ECM im August 2022

Bei ECM geht es weiter: Am 17. August wird Heiner Goebbels 70 Jahre alt – zwei Tage später, also am 19. August, erscheint als Koproduktion von ECM und dem Bayerischen Rundfunk sein neues Album A House of Call – My Imaginary Notebook mit dem Ensemble Modern Orchestra unter dem Dirigenten Vimbayi Kaziboni.

A House of Call ist ein Zyklus mit Rufen, Aufrufen, Beschwörungen, Sprechakten und Gedichten für großes Orchester. Zur Geltung kommen darin Klänge und Stimmen, die Heiner Goebbels im Rahmen von Reisen, Recherchen und zufälligen Begegnungen aufgenommen und gesammelt hat. In dem säkularen “Responsorium” begleitet und unterstützt das Orchester die Stimmen – manchmal antwortet es ihnen, manchmal fordert es sie auch heraus. A House of Call wurde im September 2021 im Münchner Prinzregententheater aufgenommen.

Am gleichen Tag wie A House of Call erscheint mit Face à Face eine gemeinsame Aufnahme von Barre Phillips und György Kurtág Jr.. Der Doyen der improvisierten Musik am Kontrabass und der in der avantgardistischen elektronischen Musik versierte György Kurtág Jr. – Sohn des größten zeitgenössischen ungarischen Komponisten – teilen eine tiefe Leidenschaft, Musik im Moment zu erschaffen. Mit seinem subtilen Einsatz von Synthesizern und digitaler Perkussion formt György für Barre Phillips stets changierende Räume – ein akustisches Labyrinth – die in Manfred Eichers detailliertem Mix klar beleuchtet werden. Face à Face wurde in den Studios La Buissonne in Südfrankreich aufgenommen.

Gedenken: Polnischer Jazztrompeter Tomasz Stanko

On July 11, Tomasz Stanko would have celebrated his 80th birthday.

The innovative Polish trumpeter (born in Rzeszów in 1942) first came to international attention in the early 1960s as a member of Krzysztof Komeda’s group, which pioneered its own approach to free playing, both in the jazz clubs and in the leader’s music for films, including soundtracks of the early movies of Roman Polanski. Stanko would later reflect on this creative formative period on his album Litania.
Tomasz Stanko’s ECM debut was Balladyna with Tomasz Szukalski on tenor sax, Dave Holland on bass and Edward Vesala on drums. Released in 1976, it counts today as a classic of European jazz.

Like his early hero Miles Davis, Stanko was a discerning bandleader and each of his groups had its own distinct character. Matka Joanna and Leosia, with Bobo Stenson, Anders Jormin and Tony Oxley balanced lyricism and turbulent free play.

The band on From The Green Hill – with its unusual frontline featuring Stanko, John Surman, Dino Saluzzi and classical violinist Michelle Makarski - grew out of an experimental session at an ECM festival in Badenweiler.

Soul of Things introduced the world at large to the talents of Marcin Wasilewski, Slawomir Kurkiewicz and Michal Miskiewicz, and on Suspended Night and Lontano, one could hear their improvisational capacities opening up under Stanko’s guidance.
Dark Eyes pooled the talents of young improvisers from the North, with two Danes (Jakob Bro and Anders Christensen) and two Finns (Alexi Tuomarila and Olavi Louhivuori) in a programme referencing music originally written to accompany plays of Swedish writer Lars Norén, as well as a title track inspired by an Oskar Kokoschka painting. “Everything you experience gets into the music,” Tomasz said.
By the early 2000s, Stanko was splitting his time between New York and Warsaw, subsequently founding a New York Quartet, notably free of native New Yorkers, for the album Wisława with Cuban born pianist David Virelles, Detroit drummer Gerald Cleaver, and Californian bassist Thomas Morgan, replaced on December Avenue by Reuben Rogers from the Virgin Islands.

In all of his groups Tomasz encouraged freedom of expression and derived great pleasure from the creative contributions of his musicians. He died in Warsaw in July 2018.

Happy birthday and congratulations, Jan Gabarek!

On March 4th,  Jan Garbarek turned 75. ECM’s decades-long collaboration with the great Norwegian saxophonist goes all the way back to his label debut Afric Pepperbird, recorded in September 1970, with Terje Rypdal, Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen. An album now regarded as a classic, it set the stage for many highly influential records with Jan as a leader, co-leader and creative contributor.

Jan’s own albums chart a continually evolving story documented on seminal recordings including Dansere, Dis, Eventyr, All Those Born with Wings, Legend of the Seven Dreams, Twelve Moons, Rites, In Praise of Dreams and Dresden.

One of the most immediately identifiable improvisers, with his concentrated and resolute saxophone sound, he has also played with musicians from very divergent backgrounds, traversing idioms, genres and traditions to explore new ground. Among Jan’s inspired collaborations are projects with Keith Jarrett (including Belonging, My Song, Luminessence, and Arbour Zena), with Charlie Haden and Egberto Gismonti (Magico, Folk Songs, Carta de Amor), with Ralph Towner (Solstice, Sound and Shadows), with  Anouar Brahem (Madar), with Miroslav Vitous (Star, Atmos), with Gary Peacock (Paradigm – Voice from the Past, Guamba),  with Shankar (Vision, Song for Everyone), with Zakir Hussain (Making Music), with Agnes Buen Garnås (Rosensfole), with Eberhard Weber (Chorus, Stages of a Long Journey), and many more.

Jan has also brought his uniquely personal sound into the worlds of composers Giya Kancheli (Caris mere), Tigran Mansurian (Monodia), and Eleni Karaindrou (Music for Films, Concert in Athens).  For 20 years he was a “fifth voice” alongside the singers of the Hilliard Ensemble, adding improvised saxophone to repertoire ranging from Morales and Perotin to Veljo Tormis (Officum, Mnemosyne, Officium Novum).

This month Jan embarks on a major tour, with dates in the Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Luxemburg and Norway. The current line-up of the Jan Garbarek Group features keyboardist Rainer Brüninghaus (a member of Jan’s ensembles since the 1980s), percussionist and tabla virtuoso Trilok Gurtu, and bass guitarist Yuri Daniel.

ECM: Naked Truth

ECM releases new Avishai Cohen album 'Naked Truth'. There is a searching, yearning quality to 'Naked Truth', and a raw beauty and vulnerability in Avishai Cohen’s trumpet sound on his most improvisational ECM recording to date. Very much music-of-the moment, found and shaped in the course of a remarkable recording session in the South of France,

Naked Truth takes the form of an extemporaneous suite. For most of its length the Israeli trumpeter painstakingly leads the way, closely shadowed by his long-time comrades – pianist Yonathan Avishai, bassist Barak Mori and drummer Ziv Ravitz - who share an intuitive understanding, hyper alert to the music’s subtly-changing emphases.  At the album’s conclusion, Cohen recites “Departure”, a poem by Zelda Schneurson Mishkovsky, whose themes of renunciation, acceptance and letting go seem optimally-attuned to the mood of the music.

ECM News: J.S. Bach und Jazz des Monats

 

On Fred Thomas's album Three Or One, Bach’s idiom is respectfully explored by Kazakh violinist Aisha Orazbayeva and British cellist Lucy Railton. It was hailed by German daily newspaper Frank- furter Allgemeine as "moments of musical bliss. If we want to carry something positive from the past year into the new one, these contemplative readings of 24 chorales are just the thing. The shortest lasts less than a minute, the longest not even five minutes. Yet there is something purifying about their unassuming beauty."

 

In its newest issue, BBC Music Magazine gave Ayumi Tanaka and her trio album Subaqueous Silence the coveted five star rating and made it Jazz choice this month. Enrico Rava, long a key figure in European jazz, has been a mentor for successive generations of Italian players. His celebratory Edizione Speciale, recorded live at the Middelheim Festival in Antwerp, brings together a team of young improvisers who play his music with fire and élan, accompanying his fountain of melodic ideas, while also taking advantage of the free space that the extensive musical forms open up. The group’s repertoire includes material from the trumpeter/flugelhornist’s early recording Enrico Rava Quartet (1978) and Wild Dance (2015), plus a rendition of “Once Upon a Summertime” – the English version of Michel Legrand’s “La valse des lilas” – as well as the universally known Cuban song “Quizás, Quizás, Quizás”. 

Subaqueous Silence, pianist Ayumi Tanaka’s leader debut for ECM – following critically acclaimed releases with Thomas Strønen (Lucus, Bayou) – is a strikingly original statement. Tanaka met bassist Christian Meaas Svendsen and drummer Per Oddvar Johansen shortly after arriving in Oslo a decade ago and they have been developing their musical language together, exploring the implications of Ayumi’s compositions. Deep interest in the work of Norwegian improvisers prompted Tanaka’s move to the West, but she also speaks of a growing awareness of her own cultural roots; there is an ascetic rigour in her playing, as well as a sense of space suggesting affinities with Japanese classical music.

and conceptualist Nik Bärtsch, best known as leader of the bands Ronin and Mobile. Entendre offers deeper insight into his musical thinking. As the title implies, Entendre is about hearing as a creative process, referencing the patient unfolding of Bärtch’s modular polymetric pieces, with alertness to the dynamics of touch, finding freedom in aesthetic restriction, serving the flow of each piece’s development while also taking the music to new places.

ECM: Keith Jarrett zum 76. Geburtstag

Over the last few months, ECM released the 10-LP facsimile edition of Keith Jarrett's Sun Bear Concerts - recorded in 1976 - as well as his 2016 performance in Budapest, spanning 40 years of solo piano improvisation. Tomorrow on May 8th, the master pianist celebrates his 76 birthday.

'Budapest Concerts was lauded by 'Le Monde' as "a fantastic physical experience of total improvisation." while The New York Times connected the musical dots of that night's performance: "The embrace of folkloric music by Bartók and other Hungarian composers further nudged Mr. Jarrett toward a dark quality – (‘a kind of existential sadness, let´s say, a deepness’)  – powerfully present in the concert´s first half. The second half features a few of Mr. Jarrett´s most ravishing on-the-spot compositions. Those ballads, like ‘Part V’ and ‘Part VII’, spark against briskly atonal or boppish pieces, gradually building the case for a mature expression that might not have been possible earlier in his career. A magnificent achievement."

Wolfgang Sandner's biography of Keith Jarrett is full of detailed musical analysis and cross-references to other artistic genres. Sandner has collected new information about Jarrett’s family background, much of which is thanks to the translator, Keith Jarrett’s youngest brother Chris. The book explores Jarrett’s work with his American and European Quartets and the Standards Trio with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette. It  charts the development of his solo concerts, investigates his work in the classical sphere, and covers his unparalleled relationship with ECM and Manfred Eicher. This new English edition is an extended and updated version of the German original.

A new photo book titled "Keith Jarrett - A portrait" by Italian photographer Roberto Masotti has just come out.
The large format hardcover edition features numerous pictures of Jarrett  -  alone and with Miles Davis, with his own ensembles, and more. The book includes introductory observations by Geoff Dyer and Franco Fabbri and a note by Masotti, who witnessed Keith in action over a period of 50 years.

"The photos are the result of my intimate and objective attention to an artist who I have followed and admired for a long time, but these pictures represent also his response that is conscious acceptance, and above all, participation. ECM: Anouar Brahem

 

Released in April 1991, Barzakh was the ECM debut of Tunisian oud master Anouar Brahem, and an album that immediately captured the attention of press and public with its gracefulness and authority.

Brahem is joined here by Bechir Selmi, the sensitive violinist from the Musical Ensemble of Tunis, and percussionist Lassad Hosni,  whose earthy frame drum and speeding darbouka would come to be important components of later Brahem recordings including  Conte de l’incroyable amour and Astrakan Café.

As Stéphane Ollivier has written: “Brahem is the oud’s conjuror, a master at bringing out the acoustic magic which this age-old traditional Oriental lute carries inside its calabash: the musical heritage of the Arab and Islamic worlds.” Brahem undertook a mission to restore the oud to the status of an emblematic solo instrument in Arab music, and at the same time expanded the tradition by working with musicians from other idioms.

During his thirty years with the label, Brahem collaborated with some of the world's most talented musicians, whatever the genre or tradition, including Barbaros Erköse, Jan Garbarek, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette, Django Bates, John Surman and Richard Galliano.

His discography includes Conte de L'Incroyable Amour (1991), Madar (1994), Khomsa (1995), Thimar (1998), Astrakan Café (2000), Le Pas Du Chat Noir (2001), Le Voyage De Sahar (2006), The Astounding Eyes Of Rita (2009), Souvenance (2014) and his latest album Blue Maquams (2017)
